چکیده

A fast (∼ 3 ms) adiabatic expansion of a volume of liquid He through the lambda transition is being used to study the nature of the transition and to model the cosmological false vacuum to true vacuum phase transition of the early universe. Preliminary results are reported showing that, in accordance with theoretical predictions by W H Zurek (Nature 317, 505; 1985), there is copious production of quantized vortex lines, which represent the superfluid analogue of cosmic strings. The line density after the expansion appears to decay in two distinct stages, with a fast decay being followed by a much slower one, in agreement with earlier work on the decay of quantum turbulence created in thermal counterflow. Extrapolation of the initial fast decay suggests an initial line density, immediately following the expansion, of ∼ 10 cm−2. Smaller, but still substantial, vortex densities are also found to occur when the system is expanded from below the lambda transition, and the physical implications are discussed.

Cosmological experiments in liquid helium

Fast passage through a continuous phase transition is expected to result in the creation of topical defects via the Kibble mechanism. Recent experiments involving the expansion of a small volume of liquid He through the lambda (superfluid) transition, as a model of the GUT (grand unified theory) symmetrybreaking transition of the early universe, are discussed and set in context. Copious creatio...

Nonappearance of Vortices in Fast Mechanical Expansions of Liquid 4He through the Lambda Transition

A new experiment has been performed to study the formation of topological defects (quantized vortices) during rapid quenches of liquid 4He through the superfluid transition, with particular care taken to minimize vortex creation via conventional hydrodynamic flow processes. It is found that the generated vortices, if any, are being produced at densities at least 2 orders of magnitude less than ...

Pinning of quantized vortices in helium drops by dopant atoms and molecules

Using a density functional method, we investigate the properties of liquid 4He droplets doped with atoms (Ne and Xe) and molecules ( SF6 and hydrogen cyanide). We consider the case of droplets having a quantized vortex pinned to the dopant. A liquid-drop formula is proposed that accurately describes the total energy of the complex and allows one to extrapolate the density functional results to ...

Direct observation of Kelvin waves excited by quantized vortex reconnection.

Quantized vortices are key features of quantum fluids such as superfluid helium and Bose-Einstein condensates. The reconnection of quantized vortices and subsequent emission of Kelvin waves along the vortices are thought to be central to dissipation in such systems. By visualizing the motion of submicron particles dispersed in superfluid (4)He, we have directly observed the emission of Kelvin w...

Torsion and Quantized Vortices

A propagation torsion model for quantized vortices is proposed. The model is applied to superfluids and liquid Helium II. ce2cm In a recent paper[1] it was shown following earlier works[2, 3] that the magnetic field associated with the torsion induced defects in spacetime with intrinsic spin density source could lead to line defects carrying a quantized flux with a relation satisfying
